The term spawn relates to planting material which consist of mycelium derived usually from tissue cultures which have been grown under laboratory conditions in bottles on a medium of cereal grains (rye, sorghum or wheat). Thus spawn comprises mycelium of mushroom with sufficient reserves of nutrients in the grain to support mycelial growth after spawning. Spawning is the inoculation of the spawn into the compost.
Once spawned, the compost is transferred to controlled temperature rooms with deducted ventilation to provide optimum temperature, aeration and humidity.
The mycelium from each particle of spawn grows rapidly and covers the entire compost.
