Q.1 How would you define an essay?
Ans. The word essay is defined in “the concise oxford dictionary” as “a literary composition (usually prose and short) on any subject”. Properly speaking, it is a written composition giving expression to one’s own personal ideas or opinions on some topics; but the term usually covers also any written composition, whether it expresses personal opinions, or gives information on any given subject, or details of a narrative or description.

Q.3 How would you state relevant essay writing for engineers/professionals?
Ans. First, read the given topic very carefully, and think about how you want to answer it. Make sure you write in respect to the given topic, rather than writing about a related topic that you thought about while preparing. Make a mental note of how the question restricts your choice of examples, and how the question is designed to structure your answer.
Write an outline, listing points you want to cover and the examples you will use. Next, write an introductory paragraph about the topic. This paragraph may be mentioned or a broad scale i.e. it may give information about some related topics as well, but should not absolutely deviate from the main topic.
Some very important points for essay writing are –
1. Should begin essay outline early in the process. How early? Be sure to link to the timeline for guidance.
2. Be sure to answer the problem statement, if any, points may be deducted in well – written essays if they fail to address the core statement.
3. Understand the importance of researching your solutions to the problem statement.
Write a paragraph for each of your points mentioned in the outline. Each paragraph should have
· A topic sentence at the beginning on some specific information.
· A sentence or two drawing conclusions form your evidence.
It is very important for engineers/professionals to mention the technical details. It is here that their actual knowledge can be demonstrated. Every information given should be supported by technical details. On approaching the end of the essay, a concluding paragraph is needed. Try to go beyond repeating your introduction and say something about the issues raised by your examples. Remember, the concluding paragraph should wrap up the whole matter and not give an absurd end.

Q.4 What are the various uses? Essay writing?
Ans. In order to write an essay, the writer should have enough knowledge on the given topic. It may even require him to do research on some topics. The writer can gain a let of knowledge in this process. This is very much applicable in case of scientific or sociological essay types. In such cases the writer digs information from diverse sources and synthesizes it. Thus enhancing his own knowledge.
Essay writing helps writers in improving their writing skills. It aids them at having a better command over language and also at enhancing vocabulary.
Essays help to critically evaluate and discuss arguments or ideas. There are various argumentative topics that can be discussed in an essay. When these topics are discussed the reader evaluates and analysis various facts and points. Contradictory aspects are also given importance. Last but not the least, essays form a very good mode of communication with the reader. Through as essay a writer can openly express his views and put them across the reader.

Q.5 What are the different dimensions of essay writing?
Ans. The various dimensions of essay writing are –
Literary Essay: -
This type of essay explores the meaning and construction of a piece of literature. This task is more complicated than reviewing, though the two are similarly evaluative. In a review you are discussing the overall effect and validity of written work, while in a literary essay you are paying more attention to specifics.
A literary essay focuses on such elements as structure, character, theme, style, tone and subtext. You are taking a piece of writing and trying to discover how and why it is put together the way it is. You must adopt a viewpoint on the work in question and show how the details of the work support your viewpoint.
Scientific Essay: -
As the name suggests scientific essays deal with science. Whatever topic is given the matter of essay should be completely in relation to science.
Expectations of a scientific essay are quite different from the other types. These essays require lot of relevant research. When enough research is done and you are confident that you have thought of all the issues that need to be covered in your essay and formed a clear plan, you can start writing. Scientific essay does not require long descriptions of a topic, but critical analysis of the topic.
Quotes should be avoided in scientific essays. A few are all right, but there should be only a few short ones.
Logical flow are correct statement are vital to a scientific essay. It helps to organize the matter in a logical progression of the required topics, so that your conclusion follows easily from the required topics. This is a very probable area of losing marks for; fluffy statements that hold no content add nothing to an essay and only reduce the amount of space with which you have to sound intelligent. Similarly, make sure your statements are consistent.
Scientific essays may be conveniently divided into four parts to aid the logical communication of facts and ideas. These four parts may be separated as follows –
1. Introduction
· Scope
· Back ground
2. Development of the subject matter.
3. Conclusion.
4. References.
Sociological Essay: -
Sociological essays are written by keeping sociological perspective in mind. Taking a sociological perspective means being able to stand outside your social world and looking at it as though you have never seen it before, examining it as an object of scientific study. In doing so, you will use sociological theory to understand social phenomenon; you will question your own preconceived ideas and assumptions and apply sociological concepts to familiar phenomena.
There are generally, three main strands in sociological theory – Functionalism, Marxism and critical theory and symbolic interactionism. In case of sociological essays, social interactions and institutions are generally examined in terms of social power and the political and how these social factors shape or determine anybodys behaviour. A sociological perspective looks at the impact of social factors such as – age, gender, ethnic group, socio-economic group, cultural group, national group etc.
Contemporary Problem Solving Essays: -
This kind of essay is basically the one that starts by identifying a problem (or problems) and then proposes one or more solutions. It is quick common to be asked a problem solving essay.
A problem solving essay should include the following basic points –
· State the problem.
· Identify the primary causes of the problem.
· Identify the various harms created by the problem.
· Do the harms exist now, or will the harms appear in future?
· Identify the individuals, groups, and/or organizations who will experience the problem and harms.
· If possible and relevant, identify the geographic locations where the problems and harms will be felt.
· Identify solutions that may solve the problem.
· State why the solutions are feasible.
· How effectively will the solution (s) solve the problem.
· When implemented, will additional positive results be produced by the proposed solution.
· When implemented, will additional negative results be produced by the proposed solution.
· On balance, is the proposed solution desirable.
