Ans. Definition: -
A preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to show the relation between the noun or pronoun and some other word in a sentence.
Ex. : Sonia is fond of tea.
Kinds of Prepositions: -
Prepositions are of five different kinds.
Simple Prepositions: -
In, of, on, off, to, up, with, at, by, for, etc.
Compound Prepositions: -
Without, within, outside, inside, into, behind, besides, beneath, below, across, between etc.
Double Prepositions: -
Outside of, out of, from out, from behind, from beneath.
Participle Preposition: -
Not with standing, concerning, pending, considering, they are participle of verb used as prepositions.
Phrase Preposition: -
According to , because of , by means of, for the sake of , on behalf of , in course of, in front of, in order to, in place of, in spite of, in stead of, on account of, owing to, with a view to, with regard to, due to etc are called phrase proposition.
Example :
(i) In case of need come to me.
(ii) Owing to his ill health he retired from service.
(iii) He acted according to my advice .
(iv) There is a big tree in front of the temple.
Adverbial Preposition: -
There are several words which can be used as prepositions as well as adverbs. If the word is used as a preposition it will have a noun or pronoun as its object.


Position of Preposition: -
The word preposition (Pre + position) itself means that which is positioned (placed) before. Thus a preposition is usually placed before the noun or pronoun it governs.
Exceptions: -
1. The preposition is placed at the end of a sentence.
(a) When the object of a preposition is a relative pronoun that. (the relative pronoun could be omitted).

(b) When the object of a preposition in an interrogative pronoun.
Example: -
What are you looking at?
Whom are you taking about?
2. The preposition may be placed sometimes in the beginning of a sentences.
Example: -
About whom are you taking?
In which box did you keep my money?
Proposition with Many Uses: -
The same preposition may be used in various senses. The uses of at in, with are given below grouped according to the different meanings.
At : (i) Place, direction.
Ex. He will meet you at the station.
(ii) Time order
He will come at 2 o¢ clock.
(iii) Activity, manner -
Ex. She is good at singing.
(iv) Rate, Degree, value -
Ex. He ran at full speed.
(v) Cause -
Ex. I marvelled at his performance.
In: (i) Place, Direction
Ex. Kangaroo is found in Australia.
(ii) Motion -
Ex. He dipped his pen in ink.
(iii) Time -
Ex. In the 19th century, in 1947, in spring
(iv) Within a space of time -
Ex. I will do it in a moment.
(v) Inclusion -
Ex. He has in him the making of a good leader.
(vi) Of dress -
Ex. He is a prince in disguise.
(vii) Physical surrounding -
Ex. Don’t go out in the rain.
(viii) Condition -
Ex. He is in poor health.
(ix) Manner -
Ex. He is talking in a loud voice.
(x) Degree -
Ex. The enemy appeared in great strength.
(xi) Identity -
Ex. You will always have a good friend in me.
(xii) Occupation -
Ex. He is in army.
With: (i) Possession
Ex. Here is a book with yellow page.
(ii) For filling,
Ex. The sack was filled with cement.
(iii) Means, instrument,
Ex. He writes with the costly pen.
(iv) Accompaniment relationship -
Ex. I live with my parents.
(v) Opposition -
Ex. Unnecessarily he fought with me.
(vi) Cause -
Ex. He was trembling with rage.
(vii) Manner -
Ex. He did the work with his whole heart.
(viii) Care responsibility -
Ex. The decision rests with you?
(ix) In-regard to -
Ex. What do you want with me?
About: It is now about six o¢ clock.
Above: He is above all meanness.
After: After death comes the judgement.
Against: You are acting against orders rules.
Behind: Do not speak ill of a person behind his back.
Beyond: Do you live beyond your means.
By: He travelled partly by land and partly by water.
For: We were ready for battle.
From: I have known him from a boy.
Into: He has got into difficulties.
The child was frightened into fits.
Of: He is a man of noble family.
On: He had been hit on the head.
Let us go on horse back.
Out of: I paid him out of my own pocket.
Over: The water is all over the field.
Through: He got this post through influence.
To: Are you prepared to say it to his face?
Under: There is nothing new under the sun.
Upon: He fell upon his enemy.
Within: Keep within doors, please.
Without: He escaped without damage.
Since; For: Since as a preposition is used before a noun or phrase denoting some point of time, for is used to denote a period of time.
He has been working since morning.
I have been dosing nothing for two house.
Till, By: Till means not earlier than, by means not later than.
I was kept waiting till 3 o¢ clock.
I shall return home by 3 o¢ clock.
