Q.12 What is a determiners? Write their states with examples.
Ans. Definition: -
Determiners are those words that modify the noun with which they are used. They always come before a noun or an adjective.
There are so many kinds of determiner.
This, that, these, those.
This and that use with the singular noun, but these and those always use with the plural noun. This and these show that the thing is near and that and those show that the thing is far.
Example: -
This is a beautiful flower.
That is an old house.
These mangoes are sweet.
Those grapes are sour.
My, Our, Your, His, Her, Its, Their: -
These are the pronouns of possessive case. They use before the singular and plural noun and show the relation.
Examples: -
My son is a good boy.
His uncle is in the police department.
Their clothes are new.
One two three: -
These numbers are numeral adjective.
Examples: -
He has one car.
Anil had three bicycles.
Radha has five books.
Each and Every: -
Each is used (a) when speaking of two or more things (b) when the number in the group is limited and definite every is used.
(a) For more than two.
(b) When the number is indefinite.
Examples: -
Every player did his best for the team.
Last week it rained each day.
When every is used, attention is focussed to units comprising a whole; which each is used; attention is focussed simply to the run.
Examples: -
You have every chance of success.
I have read every body.
A little, little, the little: -
A little means some, little means not much, hardly any, the little means not much but all of that.
Examples: -
Give me a little milk.
I have little money.
He drank off the little milk he had.
A few, few, the few: -
A few means some, few means not many, hardly any; the few means not many, but all of them.
Examples: -
There were a few parents present.
Few guardians attended the meeting.
He lost the few friends he had.
Many, Much: -
Many indicates numbers, much indicates quantity as many men, much milk.
Either, Neither: -
Either has two meaning
1. One or other of two.
2. Each of two.
Neither is the negative of either.
Examples: -
You may take either (or neither) side in the game.
Either of you can go.
Or neither side of the road was a footpath.
Some, Any: -
To express quantity, some is used in affirmative sentences any in negative or interrogative sentences.
Examples: -
I have some money.
I have not got any bread.
These are number of pairs of terms which behave like some and any. Some words like some one, some body, something, somewhere behave like some any words like anyone, anybody, anything, anywhere behave like any as.
Examples: -
He was rude to somebody.
He was not rude to any body.
Was he rude to anybody?
