Ans. Minerals are natural occurring crystalline solids. These resources are non-renewable type. Minerals can be metallic or non-metallic in nature.
These are extracted from the earth’s crust. And digging of the earth to extract minerals is called as mining.
Effect of extracting and using mineral resources are:
1. Emission of dust, suspended particles causes air solution.
2. Mining results in acid mine drainage which causes land damage.
3. Coal residue contributes to water pollution.
4. Fertility of the soil is lost.
5. Deforestation is followed.
6. Species are killed, due to toxicity of water, soil due to mine chemicals.
7. Ecosystem is disturbed.
8. Health and safety of coal miners is greatly at risk. Explosions, fires cause deaths and causalities.
9. Pneumoconiosis commonly known as black lung disease is a major hazard to under ground mining.
